Canadian magic in The Globe and Mail

It's nice to see mentions of Brent Smith (Vanishing Rabbit), Zack Mirza (Illusions of Grandeur), Darcy Oake, Ron Keller, Shawn Farquhar, and Jeff Pinsky (The Browser's Den of Magic).

As curio shops go, Brent Smith’s Vanishing Rabbit is all things magical. Attached to the ceiling is a series of old billboards advertising the greats through the ages – Houdini, Sorcar, Mandrake and a young Doug Henning as Chou Chou (pronounced Shoe Shoe), the clown who actually sold shoes for a living.

Inside Mr. Smith’s store, a creepy-looking Charlie McCarthy puppet sits above display cases filled with easy-to-perform tricks and novelties, including the ever-popular Fart Extinguisher.

“It’s a big hit with the kids,” Mr. Smith says as he emerges from behind a counter holding a deck of Svengali playing cards. “I sell a lot of cards, too. Magic is really hot right now.”

Interview: Zack Mirza about his show "Illusions of Grandeur"

Zack Mirza's show "Illusions of Grandeur" airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on OLN.

I'm excited to have to guest post at TV, eh? where I interview Zack about his show.
.
Thank you for the opportunity Diane!

An excerpt from TV, eh?:
I was very impressed to see that you include historical footage like clips from Dai Vernon’s “The Spirit of Magic.” I understand you’re going to be delving into some magic history throughout the other episodes. How important do you think it is for magicians to study the history of their craft?

Prior to the show I knew a little bit about the history of magic but going through the whole experience I got exposed to so much more. I can’t express how important it is for up and coming magicians, and magicians out there in general, for them to learn about the history of magic. We’re basically standing on the shoulders of giants. Everything that they’ve done is pretty much the ground work for what magicians are today. There’s so much respect. There’s so much wisdom that you can pull from anyone in the past. As soon as you get to learn a little bit about the history it just makes it that much more special.

Crowdsourcing: Zack Mirza interview questions

There's a high probability that I'm going to get a chance to interview Zack Mirza about his upcoming docu-series, "Illusions of Grandeur."

I'm working on my list of questions and thought I'd open it up to the floor to see if you had any burning questions you'd want me to ask Zack.  (Due to the limited interview time, there's no guarantee I'll be able to ask all of the questions submitted.)

If you have questions you'd like me to ask, e-mail me or leave them in the comment form below.

Zack Mirza: Illusions of Grandeur

Watch a teaser video at OLN.

From The Star:
Specialty channel OLN is putting some magic into its 2015 schedule.

The channel announced two new original series on Friday: Illusions of Grandeur and Close Up Kings.

Illusions follows Toronto illusionist Zack Mirza as he travels across North America on a quest to become one of magic’s all-time greats, walking in the footsteps of past magicians and learning the history of their tricks, OLN says.

It won’t be Mirza’s first time on TV. He appeared on a February episode of CBC’s Dragons’ Den, where he impressed the Dragons with some card tricks and a disappearing act.
