FISM 2022 in CBC News

From the July 29th upload "World’s best magicians gather in Canada for championship" by CBC News: The National:

From the July 28th article "The best magicians in the world are gathering in Canada this week" by Joseph Pugh at the CBC:

Two Canadians are competing this year, including Yannick Lacroix from Quebec and Cobalt, who will be competing in the close-up card magic category.

"I'm excitedly terrified," Cobalt told CBC News. He qualified for the championship after competing in an event last fall for the first time.

The Toronto-based magician says there is added stress and excitement when thinking about the audience.

"It's literally every great magician I grew up reading about … or ask[ed] for an autograph who's going to be in there now watching me do this act."

There's a lot on the line for the magicians, according to Canadian illusionist Greg Frewin.

"If you place even in the top three of this competition, your life changes," he says.

Frewin speaks from experience having won first place in the general magic category at the 1994 world championships in Yokohama, Japan. He currently performs shows at the Greg Frewin theatre in Niagara Falls, Ont., and has been training the next generation of magicians. One of his students, Ding Yang of China, is also competing at FISM.

"I can't give away what she does, but I will say this, there is one part of her act that nobody, male or female, has ever done and probably won't do for a long time because of the skill level and the skill set besides magic that it takes."

Shane Cobalt on Erdnase

From Shane Cobalt's Facebook page:
I just wrote this as a comment to someone asking "Who's Erdnase" and thought it might be interesting to a wider audience.

Let's pretend this is a real question.

The first answer, which will assume you know about the book and are just looking for the identity, is still a mystery. As it stands, I am of the mindset that Marty Demarest has found the most current convincing candidate with Wilbur Edgarton Sanders. However, everyone is speculating and as Erdnase never actually came to get the books from the printer, I believe we are in a position where we may never truly know with 100% certainty who Erdnase truly was. Unfortunate really.

That being said, let's assume you are asking the greater over arching question that many new to the field ask. What/Who is Erdnase (all about).

A relatively small book was published in 1902 under the name S.W. Erdnase. A pseudonym name we assume of the author.

While there is a lot of mystery and searching going on regarding who he was, let's discuss what the book is, why it's important, and what you can expect from it.

Toronto: Shane Cobalt Lecture

March 3rd

Have you ever attended a magic convention or general get-together and felt a touch out of place?

In this lecture, Shane Cobalt will be exploring the rarely talked about subject of perspective in magic. Using personal anecdotes, magical demonstrations, and some really crazy stories, you will learn how you can break through the web of secrecy to get closer to your personal magic goals.

You can expect to hear about:
-What YOU Bring to the Table!
-What is Good Enough?
-To Gaff or Not to Gaff... and the miracles that go with it!
-Is It Mine? And other questions on crediting.

The lecture will be interactive in nature. Attendees will have the opportunity to dictate much of the material performed during the lecture. Aside from performing effects from his personal repertoire, Shane will also have a very limited number of handcrafted items for sale.

There will be an open Q and A following the lecture.
Shane Cobalt started his journey in magic at The Browser's Den of Magic in Toronto, Canada. After years of reading, practicing, and performing, Shane was the 3rd recipient of The Len Cooper Memorial Award. Following this he was one of the first recipients of the Tony Eng Youth Fund.

Review: Shane Cobalt lecture

From The Browser's Den blog:
Shane Cobalt is a dedicated "student" of magic in the very best, truest sense of the word.

During his two hours-plus lecture given to a full room at The Browser's Den he demonstrated it repeatedly through his passion for magic, his commitment to advancing the Art and his encouragement of those less experienced than himself.

Shane promised that "everyone will be able to walk away with something you can do" and that his lecture would contain "no crap". He fulfilled those promises admirably while presenting a mixture of his favourite easy and more demanding card effects as well as a couple outstanding coin moves for good measure.

Review: Browser's Den auction

From ChasingDoveTails.com:
Yesterday (Sunday) was a hell of a day! Magicians poured into the new location of The Browser’s Den of Magic for an unexpected and unbelievable 5 hour long auction of magic props, DVDs, tricks, and my favorite, BOOKS!

When you put so many magicians or I suppose any group of people with a similar passion in the same room sparks are bound to fly. The most interesting thing about this whole ordeal was not the bidding wars, but the apparent abundance or lack of information about the items up for bids.
