Discourse in Magic with Matt Johnson (plus 60s docs)

Via iTricks, Matt Johnson featured on the web series "60 Second Docs" in the episode "The Bittersweet Ache of Escaping." (embedded at the bottom of this post)

From Discourse in Magic:
On episode 158, Matt Johnson joins Jonah to discuss escapology, adding human elements to your magic, and recreating your brand. You may know Matt for his water tank escape on Penn & Teller: Fool Us or for his semi-place finish on Britain’s Got Talent.

Matt remembers a wind-up box at his grandmother’s house sparking his initial love for magic. While not a magic trick, it still gave him this magical feeling and caused him to want to know how a little box could play music. At the age of twelve, he started learning tricks and, after performing for Matt’s siblings’ birthday, a magician took Matt under his wing. Soon, he was attending his local shop every weekend right through his teen years.

Matt Johnson in the Surrey Now-Leader

From the article "Chilliwack magician’s signature water-tank escape can’t be performed at Surrey theatre" by Tom Zillich in the Surrey Now-Leader:
Matt Johnson’s magic show in Surrey won’t be quite the same as performed elsewhere.

The Chilliwack-based entertainer will not be attempting an escape from a large water tank here this Friday night (Dec. 1), after being told the contraption can’t be used at Surrey City Hall’s Centre Stage theatre, which doubles as council chambers.

The tank-escape trick was performed by Johnson on the CW Network show Penn & Teller: Fool Us last spring.

Matt Johnson in The Abbotsford News

From The Abbotsford News:
Matt Johnson’s first crack at TV glory ended before it began when the tank he was trying to escape split open and spilled 260 gallons of water onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage during a rehearsal, along with his dreams.

The UK-born magician came back home to Abbotsford without having had the chance to perform his great escape in front of the celebrity judges – an opportunity he spent years working towards.

But just over a month later, in mid-March, he had another chance to perform the daring escape in front of bright lights, TV cameras and two judges nearly every magician on earth looks up to. He had a slot on Penn & Teller: Fool Us.

Johnson hastily ordered a new tank – this time reinforced with metal corners – custom built in Calgary and waited for it to arrive at his Chilliwack studio. It arrived at 10 p.m. the night before he was to fly to Las Vegas for his chance to impress magic legends Penn Jillette and Teller on their popular series where illusionists from around the world try to perform a trick that even they can’t decipher.

Johnson’s new tank was three inches tighter on all sides.

Matt Johnson in the Abbotsford News

From the Abbotsford News:
Submerged in water, with his neck chained to the floor of the 260-gallon tank, Matt Johnson's hands were cuffed through holes in its trapdoor roof.

Using a bobby pin, he picked both the handcuffs free and the collar off his neck.

Then came the hard part.

At Johnson's feet were 31 identical-looking keys. Thirty were useless; one would open the lock holding the door keeping him under water.

His lungs seared, begging for oxygen.

Where was that one key?

Johnson had come halfway around the world, from Abbotsford to Birmingham, to take a crack at fame: an audition on Britain's Got Talent.

But it was going wrong.
