Canadians remember Daryl

Scroll to the bottom of this post to find out how you can donate to the Daryl Easton Family Fund, or visit the GoFundMe campaign for the Easton Family.

From Michael Close's blog post "Salute to our friend Daryl":
When that tour wrapped up, Alison stayed in England to visit with relatives and Daryl returned to Vegas. The day he got in, he called to say he was back. I suggested he come over to our house for a home-cooked meal, something I thought he’d appreciate after such a long time on the road. He came by that evening.

Lisa and I prepared a pasta dish, with salad, bread, and red wine. We ate, talked, and listened to stories of the life of a lecturer. It was obvious Daryl was jet-lagged and beat to hell, which made him the perfect foil for a practical joke.

From Shawn Farquhar's Instagram:

Magicana has video of Daryl performing card magic and close-up magic on the Canadian television series "The Magic Palace."  Also at Magicana, Jamy Ian Swiss writes about Daryl and Bob Cassidy.

I'm drifting a little here, hope you don't mind.

Michael Ammar has a fantastic Facebook tribute to Daryl that begins, "There's a hole in the curtain." This part continues to resonate (bolding mine),
"with thoughts that maybe we could have said or done something, or with guilt over having missed any warning signs."

Here's the post from Michael Ammar's Facebook page:

From Sorcerers Safari's Facebook page:

On Facebook, Kenton Knepper gave away a free video inspired by Daryl.  More importantly he had this to say:
"All I ask is, in the present or future, you support magic and mentalism creators with your wallet, not just words, so they can make a living too."

And with that, here's some information about how you can help the Easton family.

From Michael Close's website:
PLEASE DONATE TO THE DARYL EASTON FAMILY FUND

The office at the Magic Castle has received calls from members and magicians around the world, asking how one can offer support and donations to the Daryl Easton family.

The Academy of Magical Arts has now established a fund to receive donations for Alison Easton, Daryl’s wife, and their two daughters. You can also send bereavement cards for Alison to the AMA offices as well, who will forward them to the family.

If you would like to make a donation to the family, please send a check payable to “The Academy of Magical Arts, Easton Family Fund” to:

The Academy of Magical Arts
ATT: Daryl Easton Family Fund
7001 Franklin Ave
Hollywood CA 90028

If you would like to donate via credit card, please call Trish Alaskey at 323-851-3313 ext. 301.
The Academy will work with Alison and the family, and pick a date in the future to hold a memorial for Daryl. If you have any questions, please email the General Manager, Joe Furlow, at: jfurlow@magiccastle.com.

You can also donate via PayPal directly using magic@daryl.net

There is also a GoFundMe campaign for the Easton Family.

It's worth noting that Daryl's online shop remains open for business.  An alternate method of showing your support for his family is by making an online purchase at his store.

Broken wand: Daryl Easton

It is with a heavy heart that I post the news about the recent passing of Daryl Easton.  I had the good fortune to meet Daryl when he was a special guest at Sorcerers Safari in 2015.  Although he's not Canadian, he had a big impact on the campers that year.   He was so easy going and just fit right in.

Magicana has an old video of Daryl performing in the Magic Palace in the 1980s.

Vanish Magazine has a feature with a Daryl tribute on page 34.

Our thoughts go out to his wife Alison, and their children, at this impossible time.

Day 6: Wednesday August 19th*
So sad.  This is the last time we’re going to be in the Mess Hall.  One last round of table banging and cheering.  I hate today.  I wish camp could go on forever.

I better finish packing.

6pm
We got our stuff out of the cabins and sorted our bags on the same field where we arrived.  Everybody was a happy kind of sad.  People were signing name tags and arms and books and stuff.  I overheard Daryl say that he was amazed that he learned stuff starting at the very first day of camp.  He said he “came here expecting to teach, but (he) didn’t expect to learn.”  That’s cool!

I wish camp were longer. Photo by James Carey Lauder.
I wish camp were longer.

Everyone was saying that this was the “Best Year Ever.”  Even though it was my first year, I’d have to agree.  There’s no way they could make camp any better than this!

Loading the bus. Photo by James Carey Lauder.
Loading the bus.
Dad came and got me just as the bus was leaving.  I kind of wish I’d taken the bus, just to be together with my new friends for a a little bit longer.  But I can sleep in the car when Dad drives.  He doesn’t ask me nearly as many questions as Mom.  And I was so tired.
It’s good to be home, but In the words of one of my new BFFs,
"I wish I could sleep for 360 days. So I could miss the school year and when I wake up it would be time for camp again."

A question to the reader:  Was Alex a girl or a boy?  What lead you to that conclusion?

A special thank you to the campers who let me interview them for this article (in no particular order):

  • Ryan from Mississauga, ON
  • Astrid from Grimsby, ON
  • Landon from Toronto, ON
  • Thomas from Montreal, QC
  • Serena from Toronto, ON
  • Angelique from Grimsby, ON
  • Stephanie from Bermuda
  • Peter from Toronto, ON
  • Cathy from Toronto, ON
  • Paolo from Toronto, ON
  • Brad from Orillia, ON

and to all the other campers (and staff) that let me ask them questions throughout their stay!

Day 4: Monday August 17th (cont)*
5pm
After lunch (burgers and lemonade and ice cream!) everyone gathered around a bunch of the adults on benches.

Cook out for lunch!

There was excitement in the air and I could barely see what was going on.  It turns out that Daryl eats his pie in a really unexpected way.  Who knew?

Great elective choices today:  cups and balls, memorized deck, mentalism, rope magic, spoon bending, and dancing canes.  I picked the dancing cane and it was so much fun!  I can actually make it look like I’m levitating it and making it move.  (And it’s so much easier than juggling.)  I need to own one.

At performance workshop we played the “questions only” game.  You can only reply to someone by asking another question. Much harder than it sounds!  It’s supposed to help us to listen and to think on our feet. It’s hilarious.  I laughed so much I cried!

9pm
All I remember about dinner was ice cream with chocolate sauce!

The lip syncs rocked.  I especially liked Shawn and Lori Farquhar doing "You're The One That I Want" from Greece, and Magic Mike Segal (and Stephanie Kline, Chris Galonska, Jen Segal, and Lisa Close) doing "Mahna Mahnam" from the Muppet Show.

It was a super talented show again tonight.  Loran did an elegant time themed piece, Mark did some stage stunts, Philip and Jonah and Chris Mayhew were fantastic.  The show ended with the Marion and Ted Outerbridge doing a fabulous stage show with big props, fancy costumes and great illusions.  Ted has the best disco ball jacket ever!

Marion stopped by our cabin to visit. She had amazing stories of touring and performance.  She MADE Ted’s sparkling jacket.  So. much. WORK!

Day 3: Sunday August 16th (cont)*
9pm
Dinner was good but the ice cream pie was AMAZING!

At the theatre they said Chris Mayhew is making a video of camp.  I can’t wait to see that!  Rosemary said she runs the Sorcerers Safari social media accounts and will help promote events that campers are involved with.  Impressive.  I don’t get the sense that people here think they’re better than anyone else -- they all just want to see everyone succeed.  Just like our moms and dads.  But WAY cooler.

Mike Close played some beautiful piano before the show.  (Is everyone here crazy talented?)  The lip syncs were extra funny tonight. Rosemary (singer) and Chris Westfall (background cheerleader) did “Cheerleader" by Omi, and Jonah (with Jonah supporting) did a duet -- "Love Is An Open Door" from Frozen.  HYSTERICAL!!!!

Found myself a cheerleader! Still from video by Chris Mayhew.

Tonight’s show was called the “World Champion Show” and featured three award winning magicians!  I got to see Greg Frewin, Shawn Farquhar, and Daryl all on the same stage.  I bet that the evening shows alone are worth the price of camp.

Rocket popsicles for bedtime snack!  (The sugar will help keep me awake for cabin visits!)  Eric came and gave us all mouth coils to try.  (I thought they would never end!!  We’re going to decorate the bunks with them tomorrow.)  Lee Asher showed us some super cool tricks with cards and then he showed us specialty decks we’d never heard of.  They looked really fancy.

6pm
The cabins are huge. You could fit 16 people in our cabin -- I’m glad there are only 10 of us. The kids in my cabin are really nice. A bunch of them are here for the first time and some of them have been here before. Steven Kline made us fabulous name tags with an old magic comic book theme. Kids that were here before brought their old ones. Some campers have sooo many! My counsellor is nice and so is my “counsellor in training.” There’s an instructor in our cabin too. I hope it’s not like having a school teacher live with you, making you do work all the time. That’d be a drag.
One of the cabins.

I did my swim test. The lifeguard said our “swimming didn’t have to be fast or pretty, we just have to do 2 lengths.” I passed! Turns out, even if you don’t pass the swim test you can go in the deep water if you put on a life jacket. They want us to have as much fun as possible. This place is incredible!

The Mess Hall (the place where we eat) is enormous! Someone said they filmed a famous movie here over 30 years ago. [Note to self: look up “Meatballs” when I get home.] Each cabin sits at their own big picnic-type table and then people go and get food (even seconds!), and take back dirty dishes, and wipe down the table. Everyone gets assigned a job. (I even saw the special guest, Daryl Easton, bringing dirty dishes from his table to the “dirty dish window.” Wow. Everybody pulls their weight!) We had potatoes and turkey and bread. They made me eat some salad -- Mom would be happy. Then we had dessert -- brownies! Sooooo good! (Worth eating salad for.)

Daryl Easton Special Guest at Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp

From Sorcerers Safari:
Daryl Easton, The Magician's Magician, Special Guest at Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp this Summer

Toronto, Ontario. - May 17th, 2015 EST - Amidst rampant magic forum speculation, Sorcerers Safari Summer Magic Camp announced it is bringing in the world famous Magician's Magician as the special guest at Magic Camp this summer.

Daryl Easton travels all the way from Northern California to the Sorcerers Safari Summer Magic Camp in Ontario, Canada. (Daryl comes for the kids, but stays for the magic; "Love it," say Sorcerers Safari staffers.)

With a record number of best selling DVDs & books, having traveled the world several times over, winning the card category at a FISM, and probably sitting on a ton of great unpublished ideas – Daryl has lots to offer the campers. He's famous for his decades of innovative thinking behind sleight of hand, which has garnered him international acclaim. Now imagine what it would be like to spend a camp session with this guy?!

The inspiration for asking Daryl to spend time at magic camp, recalled Mike Segal, owner of Sorcerers Safari, "He simply loves magic and would be a perfect fit for camp and the kids," Segal said. "And there is no better way to spend time immersed in the art of magic than with one of your heroes from all those videos and DVDs you own. Who doesn't love Daryl? He's awesome!"

The idea of having celebrity magic stars as special guests at camp is always one of the hot debates at the annual executive staff meetings. (Sorcerers Safari Summer Magic Camp chooses only the best of the best to come up as special guest.) After unanimously agreeing Daryl was a perfect fit, we asked and he gladly accepted.

"Daryl is going to have a great time at magic camp, and so are all the campers and staff. Imagine all of the experiences he can recount about performing on HBO's Magical Moments with Dick Cavett, sessioning with Dai Vernon & Larry Jennings at the Magic Castle, headlining at Caesar's Magical Empire, and the rest of all the legendary things he's done in his life," said Browser's Den of Magic owner, Jeff Pinsky. "This is going to be magic camp's 17th year in operation, and I can't remember a time when everyone was so excited about a special guest like Daryl."

Pinsky adds, "I've always admired Daryl for his skill and showmanship and now it’s nice to see him sharing with the youth of magic, as well as the local Toronto magic community."

According to Mike Segal, magic camp is growing exponentially with a high rate of return campers and return staff. With luck, Daryl will love camp so much, he too, will return repeatedly.

Are you ages 8-20 or know someone who is and would benefit from a week at Sorcerers Safari?
